Okinawa Travel Guide - Japan Travel Sights
Okinawa 沖縄 is not one destination. It is a main island with a city, a castle and an aquarium, and then a scatter of smaller islands — Miyako 宮古島, Ishigaki 石垣島, the Kerama 慶良間 group, Kouri 古宇利島 — that are reached by plane or ferry and feel nothing like each other. The single biggest planning mistake is treating them as one place you can see in three days. This guide sorts everything we have written about Okinawa by island and by question, so you can decide where to actually go. Information on this page is current as of October 2026.
The three decisions to make first
1. Main island only, or main island plus one outer island? With under five nights, stay on the main island 沖縄本島. With five nights or more, pick one outer island and fly there — do not try to do both Miyako and Ishigaki on a first trip. Each island flight costs you most of a travel day once you count airport time.
2. North or south on the main island? Naha 那覇 and the south are the city, the castle, the markets and the nightlife. The north is Churaumi Aquarium 美ら海水族館, the beaches and the quieter resorts — and it is roughly a two-hour drive from the airport. Many visitors split their stay: a night or two in Naha, then move north.
3. Rental car or not? This is the question that decides your trip. Okinawa has no railway outside the Yui Rail 沖縄都市モノレール(ゆいレール) monorail in Naha. If you are staying inside Naha and using the monorail, you do not need a car. For anything north of the city, for Miyako, or for touring Ishigaki, a car is effectively required — buses exist but run infrequently and are not built around visitors. Book the car before you fly; supply is genuinely tight in summer and over Golden Week.
Getting there and getting around
The gateway is Naha Airport 那覇空港 (OKA), connected to the mainland by direct flights from the major Japanese airports and by some international routes. The outer islands have their own airports: Miyako Airport 宮古空港 and Painushima Ishigaki Airport 南ぬ島石垣空港 — the airport’s own official name in Japanese, usually written in English as Ishigaki Airport. Most visitors connect through Naha.
From Naha Airport, the Yui Rail monorail runs straight into the city. Fares and journey times from the airport station, as published by the operator:
| From Naha Airport 那覇空港駅 to | Adult fare | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Kenchomae 県庁前 (downtown, Kokusai-dori) | 290 JPY | 13 minutes |
| Miebashi 美栄橋 | 320 JPY | 14 minutes |
| Omoromachi おもろまち (Shintoshin, shopping) | 320 JPY | 19 minutes |
| Shuri 首里 (for Shurijo Castle) | 360 JPY | 27 minutes |
Ferries to the Kerama islands leave from Tomari Port 泊港 in Naha, a short taxi or bus ride from Miebashi. Sailings are weather-dependent and can be cancelled outright in rough seas or when a typhoon is approaching — never put a Kerama day trip on the day before an international flight.
When to go
- March–May. Warm, comfortable, and the sea is swimmable from around late spring. Golden Week (end of April into early May) is the busiest domestic travel period of the year — book months ahead or avoid it.
- June–September. Hot, humid and the peak beach season, but also typhoon season. Flights and ferries can be cancelled at short notice. Build slack into the end of your itinerary.
- October–November. Our pick. Still warm, far fewer people, and the typhoon risk is falling.
- December–February. Mild by Japanese standards but too cool for most people to swim. Good for whale watching and for walking; poor for a beach holiday.
Okinawa main island — what to see
Churaumi Aquarium is the single biggest draw in the north. Admission as published by the aquarium: 2,180 JPY for adults, 1,440 JPY for high school students, 710 JPY for elementary and junior high school students, and free for children under six. Regular opening hours are 08:30–18:30 with last admission at 17:30, extended on some summer dates. The aquarium has no scheduled closed days through 31 March 2027, but it can close at short notice for a typhoon.

JUNGLIA Okinawa
JUNGLIA ジャングリア is the theme park in the north of the main island. Because it opened recently, ticketing and entry rules have been changing — check the park’s own site for current prices and whether date-specific tickets are required before you plan a day around it.

Miyako Island 宮古島
Miyako is flat, small and built around its beaches and bridges. There is very little public transport; plan on a rental car.

Ishigaki and the Yaeyama islands 八重山
Ishigaki is the base for the Yaeyama group and the one outer island with a proper town. Boat tours — the Blue Cave, the sandbar known as the Phantom Island, the mangroves — are weather-dependent and are usually sold as guided trips rather than something you can do independently.

Before you go
- Typhoons. From roughly June to October, assume at least one day of your trip could be disrupted. Do not schedule an island hop or a boat tour for your last day.
- Cash. Smaller island restaurants, beach facilities and some ferry counters take cash only. Convenience-store ATMs are reliable on the main island and in Ishigaki town, less so elsewhere.
- Sun and reef. The sun is stronger than most visitors expect, and reef shoes matter on rocky entries.
- Driving. Japan drives on the left. International Driving Permits are required for most foreign licences — arrange this before you leave home, as you cannot get one in Japan.
Combine Okinawa with
Okinawa is a flight away from everywhere else, so it works best as a block at the start or end of a trip rather than squeezed into the middle. For accommodation across the islands and the rest of Japan, see Where to Stay in Japan. For a complete change of climate, pair it with the mountains of Gifu and Nagano, reached through Nagoya, the temples of Nara, or — if you are travelling in winter — the snow in our Ski & Snow in Japan guide. On the mainland route between Tokyo and Osaka, Kyoto, Hakone and Mount Fuji are the stops most first-time visitors add. For other islands and the far ends of the country, see Kyushu, Hokkaido, Osaka and Kanazawa. On the main line west, Hiroshima is the usual stop between Osaka and Kyushu.
