Nagano Travel Guide - Japan Travel Sights

Nagano 長野県 is one of the largest prefectures in Japan and it does not work as a single destination. A castle town, an alpine valley, a snow-monkey hot spring, two preserved post towns and a ski region are all “Nagano”, and some of them are three hours apart. The other thing to know is that the headline sight — Kamikochi 上高地 — is closed for almost half the year, which catches out more visitors than anything else here. This guide sorts the prefecture into regions, flags the dates that matter, and lists everything we have written about it. Information on this page is current as of October 2026.

The date that decides your trip

Kamikochi closes for winter on 16 November 2026 and does not reopen until mid-April 2027. That is not a reduced timetable — the road shuts and the transport stops. The 2026 access season ran from 17 April to 15 November.

Even in season you cannot drive in. Kamikochi has a year-round ban on private vehicles, rental cars and motorcycles included; they are stopped before the Kama Tunnel 釜トンネル. You park at a transfer car park and continue by shuttle bus or taxi. Only buses, taxis, light vehicles such as bicycles, and permitted vehicles may pass.

From Sawando, the shuttle bus is 1,500 JPY one way and 2,800 JPY return for an adult (750 and 1,400 JPY for a child), running roughly every 30 minutes and taking about 30 minutes.

The snow monkeys, in practice

Jigokudani Monkey Park 地獄谷野猿公苑 is the other sight people come to Nagano specifically for, and it rewards a little preparation.

  • Hours: 08:30–17:00 from April to October, 09:00–16:00 from November to March. Open every day of the year, though it can close without notice for weather.
  • Admission: 800 JPY for adults aged 18 and over, 400 JPY for school-age children, free for under-sixes with a guardian, as of October 2026. An increase takes effect on 1 December 2026 — check the current figure before you go.
  • Payment: credit cards and electronic money are accepted, but QR and barcode payments are not.
  • Access on foot: the approach has slopes, steps and stairs, and the park states it cannot be used with a wheelchair or a pushchair. Assistance dogs are not admitted either.
  • The monkeys are wild. They are drawn in by feeding rather than kept, and there are days when none appear. Autumn is the most unpredictable.

Arrive at least 30 minutes before closing — the park asks visitors to be inside by then.

The regions, and what is in each

Matsumoto and Azumino 安曇野

Matsumoto is the usual base for the centre of the prefecture and the gateway to Kamikochi. Two useful things on the castle’s own site: it publishes a live waiting time for entry to the keep, and an events-and-crowding calendar for the year. Check both the morning you go — the keep is a narrow wooden structure and the queue can be long.

Kamikochi and the Northern Alps 北アルプス

Nagano city and Jigokudani

These two pair well: Zenkoji is in Nagano city itself, and the monkey park is reached from the same side of the prefecture.

The Kiso Valley 木曽谷 and the Nakasendo 中山道

Both sit on the old Nakasendo highway between Tokyo and Kyoto, and the route continues south into Gifu — our Gifu Travel Guide covers the post towns on that side, including an inn at Oi-juku 大井宿. If you have an interest in the old road rather than one town, treat this as a corridor rather than a day trip.

Hakuba 白馬 and the snow

For how Hakuba compares with Hokkaido, Yuzawa and Tohoku, and what to book first, see our Ski & Snow in Japan guide.

Southern Nagano

Getting there and getting around

Nagano has a small regional airport, Shinshu-Matsumoto 信州まつもと空港, but most visitors arrive by train. The Hokuriku Shinkansen 北陸新幹線 runs from Tokyo to Nagano city; Matsumoto is reached by limited express from Shinjuku 新宿 or from Nagoya 名古屋.

Do you need a rental car? It depends entirely on which Nagano you are visiting. For Matsumoto, Nagano city, Zenkoji and the Kiso Valley post towns, the trains are fine. For Azumino, Achi Village and moving between regions, a car saves hours. For Kamikochi a car is useless beyond the transfer car park — and in winter, mountain driving here means snow tires and passes.

When to go

  • Late April–June. Kamikochi reopens, the valley is green and the alps still hold snow. Our pick for a first visit.
  • July–August. The most comfortable summer weather in central Japan, which also makes it the busiest.
  • October–mid-November. Autumn colour in the valleys, and the last chance at Kamikochi before it shuts on 15 November.
  • December–March. Ski season, and the months when the snow monkeys look the way they do in photographs. Kamikochi is closed and the monkey park keeps shorter hours.

Where to stay

Because the prefecture is so spread out, pick a base per region rather than one for the whole trip: Matsumoto for the centre, Nagano city for Zenkoji and the monkeys, Hakuba for the snow. Our Where to Stay in Japan guide covers how ryokan pricing and meal times work, and what to confirm before booking.

Combine Nagano with

The obvious neighbour is Gifu — the Akandana car park for Kamikochi is on the Takayama side, so the two connect directly through the mountains, and the Nakasendo post towns run across both. Tokyo is under two hours by shinkansen, and Mount Fuji and Hakone sit between the two. Heading west, Kyoto and Nara are reachable via Nagoya. For a warm-weather contrast, see Okinawa. The Hokuriku Shinkansen continues to Kanazawa, and further afield lie Osaka, Kyushu and Hokkaido. Further west on the Sanyo line, Hiroshima.
