Hottarakashi Onsen, a popular day-trip hot spring facility located in Yamanashi City, offers stunning views of the Kofu Basin and Mount Fuji.
Nestled at an altitude of 700 meters, this open-air bath is surrounded by nature, providing a relaxing and liberating atmosphere.
The unique name “Hottarakashi,” meaning “left alone,” was chosen to convey to customers that the facility does not offer elaborate services. Instead, visitors can enjoy the simplicity and beauty of the natural environment while soaking in the soothing alkaline hot springs that leave the skin feeling smooth.
Hottarakashi Onsen opens one hour before sunrise, allowing visitors to witness the majestic view of the sun rising over Mount Fuji while soaking in the hot springs.
During the months of May to July, the facility opens as early as 4 AM, with the parking lot available an hour earlier. This early morning experience is said to bring good fortune and is a must-try for visitors.
The open-air baths at Hottarakashi Onsen are completely exposed to the elements, which can be a concern on rainy or sunny days.
To address this, the facility offers free rental “sugegasa” (traditional straw hats), allowing visitors to enjoy the baths regardless of the weather. The onsen welcomes babies and guests with tattoos as long as they follow the rules.
Hottarakashi Onsen features two types of baths, “Acchi no Yu” and “Kocchi no Yu,” each with indoor and outdoor baths (separate fees apply). “Acchi no Yu” is renowned for its panoramic views of Mount Fuji, Daibosatsu Pass, and the Kofu Basin. Watching the sunrise from the spacious outdoor bath is a mystical and invigorating experience.
“Kocchi no Yu” has been around since the facility’s opening and offers stunning views of Mount Fuji and Mount Kabuto.
This bath, with its rustic wooden design, is popular among regular visitors. Its lower temperature compared to “Acchi no Yu” allows for a leisurely and extended soak.
Hottarakashi Onsen retains the warm, handmade feel of a traditional hot spring.
The seemingly casual design is actually carefully maintained by the staff, reflecting their love for the onsen.
Enjoy the stunning views and the natural beauty at Hottarakashi Onsen, and experience a moment of pure relaxation.
