Exploring the Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba: A Tranquil Village Recreated

If you’re planning a trip to Japan and looking for a unique and tranquil destination, the Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba should be at the top of your list.

This picturesque location near Lake Saiko offers visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the charm of a traditional thatched-roof village.

Here’s everything you need to know about this enchanting spot.

Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba

Nestled on the northwestern shore of Lake Saiko, the Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba is a beautifully reconstructed village that brings the old-world charm of traditional Japanese thatched-roof houses back to life. Originally, this area was home to a quaint village, but a devastating typhoon in 1966 caused a landslide, destroying most of the homes. Fast forward to 2006, and around 20 of these charming houses were restored to create what is now a beloved tourist attraction.

At Iyashi no Sato Nenba, visitors can wander through the village, explore the various houses which now serve as restaurants, craft shops, and galleries, and take in the stunning natural scenery. It’s like stepping into a living museum where you can not only see but also participate in traditional Japanese culture.

While pets are not allowed inside the buildings, they are more than welcome to explore the village grounds on a leash. The paths are well-maintained and suitable for strollers, making it an ideal outing for families with young children or elderly visitors.

Upon entering the village, you’ll notice it is split into two sections by a stream. The reception is located under an illustration of Mount Fuji, and after paying the entrance fee, you’ll proceed up a gentle slope, cross a bridge, and continue along a scenic route that loops through the village.

The paths are gentle and easy to walk, with various traditional houses to explore along the way. Even with a pet stroller, you’ll find it easy to navigate.

Dressing service

“At Hinomiya, we offer rentals of armor, helmets, kimonos, and ninja costumes. It’s popular among foreigners as they can capture a picture full of Japanese essence.”

“We offer a dressing service inside the facility. You can rent and wear kimonos and armor. With armor, helmets, swords, and ninja costumes available, you can transform into a Japanese lord, princess, daimyo, or ninja.

Enjoy exploring the village, dining, and participating in activities. On clear days, you can even take pictures with Mount Fuji in the background.

Many people are seen taking photos dressed in armor and kimonos on Fujimi Bridge, making it a perfect spot for photography.

The dressing service requires a reservation, and the fee is 2,000 yen per person per outfit (kimonos are available for children aged 3 and above).”

Dining

There are three eateries within the village, all of which have terrace seating .

  1. Chadokoro Seiryotei (Sweets)
  2. Shokujidokoro Satoyama (Houtou, Udon)
  3. Teuchi Soba Mizumo (Soba)

We opted for soba noodles at Shozen, now known as Mizumo.

While the terrace might seem a bit makeshift, on a clear day, you can enjoy your meal with a breathtaking view of Mount Fuji.
